Fate is when something happens that is meant to happen but you don’t know that it will happen until it happens. There is no way to avoid it.It is pre-determined by God.There is no way of avoiding it.Shakespeare uses this in his play alot. Some examples are in the language and the dramatic irony. One example was in the prologue. We knew that Romeo and Juliet were going to take their lives because it says “A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life“and they did take their lives but the characters didn’t.A next example was when Capulet was having a party and he gave one of his servingmen a list of all the people to invite to the party but this servingman couldn’t read and he decided to ask someone if they can read the list for him and that someone was Romeo.Romeo thought that If Capulet is having a party he thought the girl he likes,Rosaline would be there, so he went to the party and instead of going to Rosaline,he saw Julie and they fell in love at first sight. The events that happens after that was because of “fate”.
Continuing on the coincidence when Romeo meets Juliet even though he went to the party to meet Rosaline, they did not know that they would of meet each other because it was pre-determined by God.When they first saw each other at the party, they fell in love and they liked each other.Later on in the party,Tybalt and Nurse recognises Romeo and they knew that Romeo is not meant to be there because he is a Capulet and Romeo finds out that Juliet is a Capulet and he didn’t know even though he went to a capulet party. He left with his friends and he still went back to Capulet’s house to see Juliet.
Another example of fate is how Shakespeare uses metaphors in the play.An example of this is when Romeo says”but he that hath steerage of my course direct my direct my sail”It doesn’t mean that someone is really steering him and directing his sail. This means that Romeo is putting his life in the hands of fate which is God.Romeo says this before he goes to Capulet’s party where he met Juliet.Shakespeare did this because he believe in fate and he was trying to tell us that Romeo isn’t in charge of what he is going to do at the party but God was.
Even though in Romeo and Juliet is at the beginning,Romeo was not at the fight because he was depressed over Rosaline..He is normally with Benvolio & Mercutio. He could of gotten killed that day.But it is just a coincidence that he wasn’t there that day. Friar Lawrence quarantine couldn’t deliver the letter nor couldn’t he find a delivery boy to do it because he thought they were all too scared of passing it on.This led to Romeo not knowing the plan that Juliet isn’t dead and he went to Verona where Juliet was and he thought that Juliet was dead,so he killed him self and then Juliet woke up but and saw him but she was too late to stop him, then she killed herself. And in the prologue it says”A pair of star-cross’d lovers take their life” and that is what they did. However,if Romeo arrived couple seconds later he would of known that Juliet isn’t dead and she is actually sleeping. He would of seen her awake.
Prince Escalus banished Romeo from Verona.Romeo was sad even though Prince Escalus went easy on him.He could of killed Romeo but he didn’t.Although he has banished, Romeo still went back to Verona and killed him self when prince Escalus could of did this him self. And just before he was about to die,Juliet woke up.She didn’t plan for Romeo to kill his self,God did.Nor she didn’t know that she was going to kill her self, but since she cant live without Romeo she killed her self. Also,Friar Lawrence arrives moments after Romeo’s suicide. He could of saved Romeo and Juliet wouldn’t of die but the prologue said that they were going to take their lives.
My final paragraph on how Shakespeare uses fate is Juliet and her family.Juliet and her family never Liked the montague family but when she met Romeo she is now saying that its just because of a name they dont like each other.
